Local News in Brief : Assembly OKs $166,500 for Conservancy Grants
Abill that would set aside $166,500 for Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy grant programs has been passed by the state Assembly by a 56-18 margin and sent to Gov. George Deukmejian.
Initially, the conservancy requested $1 million for grants but, in late June, Deukmejian vetoed that request in the state budget. The conservancy scaled back the proposal to $166,500 for five programs to provide outdoor experiences for poor and handicapped children.
Joseph Edmiston, conservancy executive director, has said the Deukmejian Administration has indicated a willingness to support the revised proposal.
The funds were included in a bill by Assemblyman Gray Davis (D-Los Angeles). Besides the grant funds, Davis had hoped to set aside $2.5 million to buy 500 acres along the eastern slope of Malibu Canyon State Park. But because of continuing opposition from the Administration, Davis removed that allocation before the bill reached the Assembly floor for final passage Friday.
