Walters Discusses Libyan Terror With Mitterrand

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Vernon A. Walters, on a European mission to rally support for American policies against terrorism, said Tuesday that he has discussed with France and other allies ways of combatting political violence but has made no demands for specific action against the Libyan regime of Col. Moammar Kadafi.

“There was no question of demands or anything of that sort . . . we discussed between friends questions of mutual interest,” Walters told reporters after a 45-minute meeting with French President Francois Mitterrand.

Walters said he was very happy with his stop in France, which also included talks with a senior official from the French Foreign Ministry.

The insistence that the United States was making no demands on its allies echoed earlier statements after Walters’ talks with government and North Atlantic Treaty Organization officials in Brussels and Madrid.

However, U.S. officials in Washington have said that Walters, who will also travel to The Hague, Bonn, London and Rome, is in Europe to press for tough new sanctions against Libya, which Washington accuses of planning terrorist attacks against Americans or American interests.
