The Alabama Supreme Court in Montgomery rejected Atty. Gen. Charles Graddick’s appeal for a new runoff, leaving Lt. Gov. Bill Baxley as the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial nominee. The court, in a 6-2 decision, upheld a party subcommittee’s ruling that Graddick’s 8,756-vote runoff victory over Baxley resulted from illegal Republican crossover votes. The subcommittee declared Baxley the winner of the June 24 election, making him the nominee to succeed Gov. George C. Wallace.
