Siamese Twins’ Chance of Survival Called Slim
The birth of Siamese twin girls joined at the stomach and chest has been called an unhappy occasion by doctors who suggest their chances of survival are slim.
“There are many tragedies we witness but this is possibly the worst,” Dr. Nigel MacDonald, of Winnipeg’s St. Boniface Hospital, said Wednesday.
The twins, who had a combined birth weight of 10 pounds, 8 ounces, were delivered by Caesarean section Tuesday.
Hospital spokesman Lisa Osborne said that medical officials considered it a miracle the girls survived delivery.
The infants, who share major organs, including a liver and bowel system, were listed in critical but stable condition.
