SCHUBERT: THE PIANO TRIOS (TRIO, OPUS 99; TRIO, OPUS 100; ADAGIO IN E-FLAT, OP. POSTH.; TRIO IN ONE MOVEMENT. Beaux Arts Trio. Two Philips Compact Discs 412 620-2. This new edition of Schubert’s trios is different than the group’s first recording of these works in 1967. Two decades have darkened the Beaux Arts’ approach to this music--drama and power have replaced the fresh lyricism and enthusiasm of the earlier set. This approach works especially well with the second trio. There is a remarkable consistency, however, found in both recordings produced two decades apart: the players’ technical skill and spirited interplay never flag. The CD sound is crisp. It makes one appreciate all the more pianist Menahem Pressler, violinist Isidore Cohen and cellist Bernard Greenhouse.
