A 46-year-old Newport Beach woman was killed Saturday after the horse she was riding ran away with her at a full gallop and she either jumped or fell from the animal, the Huntington Beach Fire Department reported.

Capt. Dennis Groat identified the victim as Beverly Roberts. He said the accident occurred shortly before noon near Smokey Stables in open fields near the Bolsa Chica area of Huntington Beach.

Roberts had rented the horse from the stable, according to Senior. Deputy Coroner Ted Sullivan. He quoted witnesses as saying the horse bolted.

“One of the bystanders said it was a like a wild horse runaway,” Groat said.

However, paramedics summoned to the scene found no one who saw Roberts fall or jump from the horse.

Groat said Roberts cried “for a few moments,” then lapsed into unconsciousness. He said she had suffered extensive injuries to the back of her head. Roberts was taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital’s trauma center, where she died.

Groat said he did not know whether Roberts was an experienced rider. A spokeswoman for the stable declined to be interviewed.
