The Soviet Union’s largest republic has decreed private showings of violent films and videos an offense punishable by up to two years in jail, an official Soviet legal publication reported. The decree, passed by the government of the Russian Federation on Aug. 1, declared the making, storing, distribution or showing of films propagating “the cult of violence and cruelty” a criminal offense. Under the decree, convicted offenders would be sentenced to up to two years in jail, two years of corrective labor or fines of up to $435 for showing such films.
