Tips to Save

Judith Morgan is full of sound tips about tipping (Aug. 10). The tip table she mentioned is very much like the one I saw in California magazine a few months ago. It certainly saves much wear and tear.

Another tip is to take 10% of your bill, then halve that and add it to the 10%, making your tip an honest 15%.

One of my most unusual experiences with tipping occurred in Munich at a Hilton Hotel. A gracious maid attended to our after-hours needs promptly and with TLC. Not only that, but she had a lovely brogue. Naturally we offered her a tip for her services, which we felt were over and above her normal duties. She adamantly refused, despite our efforts to press the tip. “It’s all part of my services,” she asserted as she declined like a true professional. And her brogue? “I’m from Scotland,” she exclaimed proudly.
