Burglars are likely to strike an average of one in four households over a 10-year period, and so far this decade households have lost an estimated $13 billion to burglars, the FBI said. Reported residential burglaries totaled more than 13 million from 1980 to 1985, or an average of 27 burglaries annually for every 1,000 households, the bureau said. If burglaries continued at that rate for 10 years, an average of 27% of all households would be affected. The FBI said the majority of residential burglaries occur in daylight, and that the average loss is higher in the daytime: $1,064, contrasted with $809 at night.
