“The Pearl.” “Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror.” Harold Budd/Brian Eno. Editions EG. AAD. Most recently recording with Britain’s Cocteau Twins, L.A.-based keyboardist/composer Budd is one of the most minimal of minimalist musicians and also one of the most pleasing of the “new age” sort. He strikes relatively few notes, but each has the relaxed rightness of a tai chi master’s movements. These collaborations with mentor Eno (Budd also has two solo albums) are gently flowing yet scenic rivers of sound that transcend by far the Muzak-ish noodling sometimes found in this genre. “Plateaux” (1980) is the more spontaneous work, “Pearl” (1984) the more cohesive.
