The Justice Department expects to keep its plea agreement involving confessed Navy spy John A. Walker Jr. even though Walker failed recent lie detector questioning about the scope of his past espionage activities, department spokesman John Russell said. Walker is to be sentenced Oct. 3 to a life term, which could allow him parole in 10 years. U.S. Atty. Joseph Russoniello of San Francisco said the doubts about Walker’s story will not jeopardize the conviction of Jerry A. Whitworth, Walker’s accomplice in California.
