Pan American World Airways announced Monday that it has suspended flights to Karachi until authorities explain the airport security lapses that resulted in the seizure of one of its jetliners.

Frederick Reid, an aide to Pan Am Chairman Edward Acker, told a news conference here that the incident Friday at Karachi airport raised important security concerns.

Reid criticized Pakistani authorities for not heeding Pan Am’s warning about the generator providing electricity for the plane’s air-conditioning and lighting systems.

The generator’s failure caused the hijackers to panic and open fire on the passengers, Pakistani officials have said.
