The Times Herald’s owner, Media News Group, acted less than a week after purchasing the newspaper from Times Mirror Co., the Los Angeles-based communications company that publishes the Los Angeles Times. The layoffs included employees from advertising, circulation and editorial and leave the paper with 1,200 workers. Times Herald executives have said they also plan to cancel their contract with the United Press International wire service and to secure a cheaper newsprint supplier--moves that they estimate will save the paper $7 million annually.
