Report Card

When I began reading of the American Conservative Union’s “annual political report card” (Times, Aug. 27), I immediately became the victim of a serious knee-jerk attack. The attack subsided greatly after I read of their warning to Rep. Ed Zschau (R-Los Altos) to “mend his fences” and scored him a 57.

By the time I got to the part about their having awarded Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) a score of 91 (up 11 points from 1984), waves of chuckles were overtaking me. Then, “Perfect conservative scores in the Senate went to Jesse Helms (R-N.C.), etc.” At this point, no longer were there any signs of previous knee-jerk spasms. I was totally engulfed in great yocks of laughter.

Now I realize that this American Conservative Union watchdog committee is gifted with a keen and subtle sense of humor rarely displayed by political conservatives. Oh yes, Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) received a 4.
