Rep. Claude Pepper (D-Fla.) blew out all 86 candles on his birthday cake and said of the tributes from his congressional colleagues, “my father would have been delighted and my mother would have believed it.” Pepper then conducted a hearing on the theme “ability is ageless” with witnesses such as Dr. Albert Sabin, 80, developer of the oral polio vaccine. They supported Pepper’s push to eliminate the age 70 mandatory retirement standard for business.
