DOWNEY : FOCUS : Hotel at the Hub

Share

The eight-story Embassy Suites Hotel along Firestone Boulevard stands in the heart of Downey’s business district. The $15-million, salmon-colored hotel is considered the cornerstone of redevelopment in Downey by city officials who say an improved Firestone Boulevard is essential to revitalize the city’s dying commercial district. The 220-room hotel, which opened in December, is surrounded by construction sites for new office buildings, a restaurant, apartments and condominiums. Behind the hotel is the new civic center, which was completed in 1985. West of the hotel, a 30,000-square foot office building is being built, and in the southeast corner of the hotel’s 4.6-acre lot a restaurant is under construction. The Firestone Corridor is one of three major redevelopment areas approved by the City Council in 1978 to bring in revenue and stimulate downtown development.
