Opening of Cerritos Post Office Delayed Until First of October

City officials cut the ribbon dedicating the long-awaited Cerritos Post Office last month, but apparently have not cut through the red tape surrounding it.

The office’s opening, originally scheduled for mid-September, has been delayed until around the first of October, pending the building’s final inspection, said Bert Miersma, postmaster for Artesia and Cerritos.

He said the Spanish-style building, on the corner of 183rd Street and Carmenita Road, must be inspected by its architect and the Postal Service before it can be opened. The contractor must give the architect 10 days notice before the inspection, which has not yet been scheduled.

After the building passes inspection, Miersma said the Postal Service will need a week or two before it can open the office.

Daniel K. Wong, mayor pro tem, who has pushed for the new office for several years, said he is not worried about the delay.

“Of course, we’re anxious to have it open, (but) we’ve waited so long, another couple of weeks we can tolerate,” he said. “I just hope it’s not any more.”

Miersma said when it opens, he expects the new office to relieve much of the congestion at the busy Artesia-Cerritos Post Office on 183rd Street near Pioneer Boulevard.
