Vatican pressure caused Sister Margaret Ellen Traxler of Chicago to resign from the board of Justice Campaign, an interfaith effort to restore Medicaid funds for abortions for women who become pregnant as a result of rape or incest. Traxler, a school sister of Notre Dame, has been ordered not to speak about the issue. Sister Deborah Barrett, campaign national coordinator, said Traxler cited “pressures from Rome” for resigning. Barrett’s non-canonical order is not under Vatican jurisdiction.
