Ferraro’s Son a Dropout, 6 Mos. Short of BA Degree

John Zaccaro Jr., former vice presidential candidate Geraldine A. Ferraro’s son who faces cocaine-selling charges, has withdrawn from Middlebury College, a school spokesman said today.

“We will confirm he has withdrawn,” spokesman Ronald Neif said. “But we can’t say anything more. It’s a family matter.”

Classes resumed at Middlebury this week and Zaccaro, who was known as the campus “pharmacist,” according to police, was not present. He must reapply for admission if he is to complete his undergraduate work, Neif said.

Due to Graduate in March

Zaccaro, 22, a political science major due to graduate in March, was arrested last Feb. 20 after police said they made an undercover cocaine purchase from him at his off-campus apartment.

He denied one count of selling cocaine and one count of possession of cocaine with intent to sell.

Zaccaro spent his summer as a bartender at a New York “preppie” bar, Dorrian’s Red Hand. One of his customers was Robert Chambers, 19, accused this week of murdering another Dorrian’s regular, Jennifer Levin, 18, during a sex session in Central Park.

Vermont District Court Judge Francis McCaffrey refused last month to dismiss charges against Zaccaro, and a status conference on the charges has been set for Friday. Zaccaro’s lawyer, Charles Tetzlaff, said police unfairly singled out his client because of his mother’s celebrity status and asked that the charges be dropped.
