Disneyland’s Extra Effort

Share

I would like to reply to Angela Campos Broussard’s Aug. 31 letter regarding how poorly she was treated by Disneyland when she brought her elderly mother-in-law there for a visit.

We visited Disneyland in February of this year with our 9-year-old son, who had surgery on his leg. At the entrance gate we were given a brochure explaining the procedure for accommodating the handicapped. I wonder if Mrs. Broussard failed to receive or read this brochure, for if she had she would have known how to approach the rides that she mentioned without waiting in long lines.

Our son was unable to walk at all and had to be carried from his wheelchair to the rides. Although we had prepared him for the possibility that he would not be able to ride many of the rides, we found just the opposite to be true.

My other son and I waited in a long line for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride while our handicapped son and my husband went inside the ride through the exit. When we reached the front of the line, the girl very sweetly told us that we did not need to split up and wait in the long line, but next time to all come to the exit together. From then on we entered every ride through the exit. My husband was able to carry our son on and off all rides and Disneyland employees treated us wonderfully.

We had a wonderful time. I have intended to write Disneyland several times to commend them for how accommodating everyone was to us. I think Mrs. Broussard would have found the same to be true if she would have more aggressively inquired about the procedures for accommodating the handicapped.
