A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy accused of beating two Covina men he had arrested on suspicion of drunk driving pleaded no contest to two counts of assault under color of authority. Edwin Cruger, 31, faces a maximum sentence of three years and eight months in prison, Deputy Dist. Atty. Lawrence E. Mason said. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors agreed to seek dismissal of additional charges of false imprisonment and filing a false police report. Cruger was accused of taking Terry Ressler and Daniel David Scott to a parking lot in San Dimas in February, 1985, and beating them with a flashlight. He was suspended from the Sheriff’s Department when charges were filed.
