GM may pare the number of its salaried workers.

An internal General Motors memo, obtained by the Detroit Free Press, said the company wants 5% of the white-collar employees in its Chevrolet-Pontiac-Canada group to quit by the end of the year and an equal number to resign before next September. The memo said the company is offering “incentive separation buyout” packages worth an average of $49,500 to workers under age 53, the newspaper reported. The memo, signed by L. C. Wolf, director of budget, business plan, group pricing and special analysis for the group, said, “By Aug. 31, 1987, a reduction in salary employment of 10% from April 30, 1985, has been mandated by corporated management.”
