Being a retiree of the Department of Water and Power, I and thousands more are interested in the intent and desire of the mayor and the City Council of Los Angeles to make our retirement board divest itself of all stocks now invested in good U.S. companies that have branches in South Africa. The city government doesn’t pay one cent into our retirement fund, so why then should they dictate to our retirement board?
I am not against divesting only because of the money involved, but because I do not think we have any more right to tell a small country, half a world away, how to run their 300-year-old country (100 years older than the U.S.A).
