Shultz to Congress: Keep Screaming About Daniloff
Secretary of State George P. Shultz urged members of Congress today to “keep screaming” about Soviet allegations of spying against American reporter Nicholas Daniloff.
During an appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Shultz reiterated the U.S. position that there is “no equivalence” between Daniloff and Gennady F. Zakharov, the Soviet charged with spying in this country.
He said Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev should be made to realize that the arrest of Daniloff caused “a very deep reaction and feeling that goes across the board” in the United States.
“I would counsel not to be quiet, but quite the reverse,” Shultz said. “So please don’t misunderstand me. I hope you keep screaming about it and I intend to, but I intend to do more things than just scream about it.”
He refused to elaborate.
