‘Sno Joke: Northeast Powdered
A September snowfall surprised residents in Upstate New York and New England today, knocking down trees and power lines and giving snowplow crews an early start on the winter season.
“I went to bed and it was pretty clear. I woke up and it was all white,” said Thomas Keegan of Bloomingdale, N.Y., eight miles from Saranac Lake, where an inch of snow was reported.
State snowplow crews cleared roads in northern New Hampshire, where five inches fell on Mt. Washington, and two inches were reported at nearby Pinkham Notch.
Snow fell in the higher elevations in Vermont, with up to an inch in Waitsfield in the Appalachian Gap, officials said.
In Scituate, Mass., just south of Boston, high winds hit a marina, knocking down power lines and damaging boats anchored at the Scituate Marina, police said.
