Hundreds of heavily armed riot police stormed a Brazilian prison in Presidente Venceslau, 396 miles northwest of Sao Paulo, crushing a rebellion in which inmates had taken 14 prison employees hostage. Eight inmates were slain during the assault, three died later of wounds and two others were seriously injured, police said. Seven hostages reportedly received minor wounds. The inmates had threatened to kill the hostages unless they were provided with a bus, two cars, four machine guns and safe conduct out the prison, police said.
