The Nation : Jets Get Wind Detectors

Share

Boeing Co. has begun to install a new wind shear detection and guidance system on certain commercial jetliners to help pilots handle the potentially dangerous down-thrust of air that changes speed and direction as it strikes the ground, the company announced. Wind shear has been blamed for the crash of a Delta Lockheed L-1011 in August, 1985, when 135 people were killed at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. The new system has recently been certified by the Federal Aviation Administration for use on Boeing’s 737-300, the company’s twin-engine 128-seat jetliner.
