Billy Martin is apparently out of the picture as a candidate to become manager of the Minnesota Twins next season. Martin said he would accept the job only on his terms. Howard Fox, the Twins’ president, in turn told the Minneapolis Star and Tribune that Martin’s terms were unacceptable and he won’t be asked to apply.

Martin has said he would manage again only if he had complete control of the baseball operations and a long-term contract, the newspaper reported.

Sources say the top candidates include Angel broadcaster Joe Torre, Yankee coach Joe Altobelli and Yankee broadcaster Jim Kaat.

Also, Martin’s 26-year-old estranged wife, Heather Martin, has filed a $500,000 lawsuit asking the court to prohibit Martin from ejecting her, her mother, her 75-year-old grandmother and her 9-year-old son from the Danville, Calif., home into which she and Martin moved in 1980. The couple married in 1982 and separated in 1985.
