Psychologists counseled shocked high school students Friday, one day after dozens of them witnessed the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old girl reportedly during an argument with her former boyfriend.

Assistant Dist. Atty. John Coffer said he expected Leonard Rubio, 18, to be charged Monday with murder. Rubio was undergoing psychiatric evaluation.

“It just goes to show violence knows no boundaries,” said Pierre T. Bidou, police chief of this community about 35 miles from San Francisco.

Bidou said dozens of students saw Heather Dunn fall.

He said Rubio, who had graduated from the school last June, was waiting for Dunn and they began a quiet argument about breaking up their summer-long romance.

“Evidently, they had been arguing before,” Bidou said.

As the argument grew more heated, Rubio pulled a .38-caliber pistol from his jacket and shot Dunn, Bidou said.

School was dismissed shortly after the shooting, but many students stayed around the campus, crying and consoling each other.

The atmosphere at school on Friday was grim but orderly, Bidou said. Many students and some teachers talked with counselors, he said.

A pep rally for a Friday night football game was canceled, but the game was reportedly to be played as scheduled.
