Seven Democrats and four Republicans vied for their parties’ nominations in Hawaii to succeed 12-year Democratic Gov. George Ariyoshi. Voters also faced a rare double election in one of Hawaii’s two U.S. House seats: the primary for a regular term and a special election to fill out an unexpired term. State law prevented Ariyoshi from seeking another consecutive elected term. Former U.S. Rep. Cecil Heftel, who resigned from his seat during the summer to seek the governorship, was considered the front-runner in the Democratic primary. Voters in Honolulu were to vote twice on a successor for Heftel, including the special election to fill his current term.
