South Africa’s national police force is hiring 1,000 blacks and sending them to patrol black townships with guns and full police powers after three weeks’ training, the Johannesburg Sunday Star reported. Regular members of the national police receive a year’s training. The recruits “are simply being trained to make the long arm of the police force a little bit longer,” Brigadier Jaap Venter, a police spokesman, was quoted as saying.
