Almost 35 million Americans had no health insurance in 1984, the Employee Benefit Research Institute reported in Washington. The number of people without government or private health insurance jumped by 4.4 million, or nearly 15%, between 1982 and 1984, the institute said. In 1984, the latest year for which the statistics were available, 65% of the population and more than 75% of workers had coverage through their jobs. But 87% of the 34.7 million uninsured people were workers or their dependents.
