The World : Vandals Halt Tokyo Trains

Share

Vandals cut control cables to six Japan National Railways commuter lines during rush hour, halting trains and snarling traffic for thousands of commuters. Police blamed radical groups opposing a return of the deficit-ridden national railroad to private ownership. A railroad official said that cables were cut along tracks in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures, halting all travel on six lines in and out of the capital. It was the second such attack against the railroads in the past year. Last Nov. 29, saboteurs cut railway cables in 34 places across Japan, paralyzing train routes to Tokyo and causing problems for about 6 million commuters.
