Former Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit was acquitted by an Ankara court of violating a ban imposed by the former military government on his involvement in party politics. The original charge stemmed from a speech that Ecevit made in May at a rally of the small Democratic Left Party, led by his wife, Rahsan. Ecevit, 61, told the court that he had done no more than assert his legal right to explain which party he supports.
