Soviets Issue Nuke Safety Plan
The Soviet Union issued a nine-point proposal today for improving the safety of nuclear energy on an international basis after the world’s worst nuclear accident at its Chernobyl plant last April.
The program, reported by the official press agency Tass, included suggestions for the speedy exchange of information on nuclear accidents, joint development of the next generation of reactors and measures to prevent nuclear terrorism. The proposals followed sharp criticism of the Soviet Union for its initial silence on the April 26 Chernobyl accident.
