R.H. Estates : Community Center OKd

Share

A proposal to establish a community center at the Peninsula Center shopping mall was endorsed by the City Council Tuesday night. But the council delayed approval of a formal lease agreement until the city attorney clarifies certain legal points.

The agreement, negotiated with Sierra Management Co., the mall’s owner, would allow the city to use about 2,200 square feet for three years rent-free. The space is at the back of Peacock Alley behind the Wherehouse record store.

The community center would be used for the city’s fitness classes, which currently are held elsewhere at Peninsula Center. Other uses for the room would be determined by the city Park and Activities Commission and presented to the council for approval.

Sierra has agreed to pay for water, gas and electricity and some of the cost of preparing the room. The city would pay about $5,000 for carpeting, painting and lighting fixtures.
