LONG BEACH : Convention Center Losses
The Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center lost $1.1 million in fiscal 1984-85, the lowest deficit in the facility’s eight-year history.
Losses have declined from a high of $3 million in the 1981-82 fiscal year, according to an audit released by City Auditor Robert Fronke.
“Nobody expected that convention center to pay for itself,” Fronke said in an interview Wednesday, adding that practically none of the convention centers around the country operate at a profit. The auditor said, however, that in his opinion the center makes up for the deficit by attracting tourists and conventions to the city.
The center is expected to continue operating at a deficit in the near future, with about $2 million in losses estimated for the 1985-86 fiscal year that ended in June, Fronke said.
