Senior Police Officer Slain Near Manila
MANILA — Communist rebels shot and killed a senior police officer as he went to work Wednesday in an ambush about 15 miles northwest of Manila, the Philippine News Agency reported.
The agency said that Lt. Col. Angel Lansang, deputy superintendent of the national police for Bulacan province, was alone in his car when rebels opened fire with automatic rifles and pistols. Lansang, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene, the report said.
The slaying brought to 1,824 the number of people authorities say have been killed since January in clashes between the army and the Communist rebels, who have been waging a 17-year-long guerrilla war.
