TOTOWA, N.J. —
Forty-four members of the Genovese organized crime family were arrested today on charges of running a gambling ring, eliminating a major New Jersey faction of the organization, authorities said.
The 44, and one person who remained at large, are accused of participating in a $1-million-a-week gambling operation in northern New Jersey. The operation’s headquarters was a social club called The Cage in Newark that was turned into a casino featuring card games with pots as high as $30,000, authorities said.
