Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.), faced with the threat of a filibuster, scuttled legislation that would have revised the nation’s product liability laws. Dole said he supported the bill but added: “It’s obvious it’s not going to happen this year.” He said no more action would be taken before the Senate adjourns next month. The bill provides for a federal takeover of laws governing damage cases involving unsafe or defective products, including caps on the amount of awards for pain and suffering.
