2 Nuclear Safety Pacts Signed

Delegates from 49 nations signed two agreements on nuclear safety today as a reaction to the April 26 Chernobyl disaster, the world’s worst nuclear accident.

One of the agreements calls for quick international notification of uncontrolled releases of radioactive material from civilian installations and the second for prompt emergency assistance from other nations in the event of a nuclear accident. The conventions were worked out by international lawyers during the summer, then approved unanimously by delegates at a special three-day conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
