Laurie McCarthy, Orange County chapter president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, got first-hand experience in what she has been battling: a car accident with a driver suspected of being drunk.

McCarthy was one of six people injured in an accident last Sunday. Police arrested Dane Heftved, 26, on suspicion of felony drunk driving and released him on his own recognizance.

The Costa Mesa man had been convicted three times for drunk driving and served jail time in all three cases, according to police.

McCarthy, 41, who along with her husband became involved with MADD because of their concern about drunk driving, said she was recovering from the accident and noted it could have been worse.

“I know of a lot worse (accidents) than this,” she said. “This is nothing compared to others. . . . No one is immune, no one.”
