Hydroplane Sinks but May Qualify at Las Vegas
Miss Marina sank in Lake Mead Friday but still could qualify for today’s finals of the $150,000 Budweiser Las Vegas Silver Cup unlimited hydroplane competition.
Lifted from the depths four hours after it sank, the boat made a qualifying run Saturday that barely missed the 105-m.p.h. speed requirement. Driver Ron Armstrong, who won at San Diego last Sunday, was clocked at 104.l79 m.p.h. He’ll get another chance to qualify this morning.
In 22 hours, the crew had replaced the engine and electrical system and had patched a hole in the hull of the craft, which had its named changed from Miss Bahia after the San Diego race.
Miller American and Miss Budweiser are co-favored in the race, which will decide the national championship.
