Estes a Timely Reminder

Having just returned from another trip through Colorado and missing Estes Park again, Jerry Hulse’s Sept. 7 article was a timely reminder that next time we must go there. We have found such pleasant golfing at Colorado Springs and at Tamarron at Durango that we never seem to get time for Estes.

It was interesting to know that Stanley used his steamer to transport his guests. You should note that the Stanley Steamer used kerosene for fuel, not water. Water did not heat the steamer. Stanley used a kerosene burner to heat water in a boiler to generate steam. The water when converted to steam is the working fluid which expands in the engine to provide power.

During the recent gasoline shortage, several attempts were made to revive the steam engine for automotive use. They failed due to the same problem that Stanley had--the system consumes more water than fuel. The frequent stops for water can no way compete with the range of the gasoline engine.
