Iran Says It Bombed an Iraqi Oil Field

NICOSIA, Cyprus — Iranian warplanes bombed an oil field in southern Iraq on Sunday and destroyed the control center that pumps oil to Saudi Arabia, according to Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency.
The IRNA report, monitored in Nicosia, said the raid on the Romaila oil field 33 miles southwest of the city of Basra “all but halted oil pumping operations.”
IRNA, quoting an unidentified Iranian air force source, said that warplanes struck oil wells in the Romaila field as well as the control center and that all of the planes returned safely to their base.
There was no immediate comment from Iraq.
Iran’s claim could not be verified independently because both sides bar foreign reporters from battle zones and target areas.
In Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, the military command said its planes carried out 108 bombing missions Sunday against Iranian troop emplacements along the 730-mile war front.
