Robbery Try at Vatican Payroll Office Thwarted

VATICAN CITY — Three armed men burst into the Vatican’s payroll office just behind St. Peter’s Basilica today, the monthly payday, but fled after an employee sounded an alarm, officials reported.
It was the first armed robbery attempt in Vatican City, police said. Police sent up helicopters and blocked off nearby streets, but the three vanished into rush-hour crowds.
