Britain’s Labor Party voted today to gradually phase out the nation’s nuclear power plants in a “decades-long process” if it wins control of the government in the next election.

The vote was a defeat for the militants in the party, in particular National Union of Mineworkers President Arthur Scargill, who wanted the more than 20 plants phased out during the life of the next five-year Labor government.
