SDSU Transfer Chana Perry to Sit Out ‘86-87 Season

Chana Perry, the women’s basketball All-American who transferred to San Diego State from Northeast Louisiana this fall, will not compete in the 1986-87 season, it was announced Tuesday.

Perry is enrolled at SDSU, majoring in criminal justice. She will have two years of eligibility remaining.

“The Student Affairs office, Coach (Earnest) Riggins and I have reviewed Chana’s situation,” Athletic Director Fred Miller said. “We felt it was in her best interests, academically and athletically, not to compete this season in making this transition.”

Perry was the center of recruiting violations at Northeast Louisiana that caused the school to be put on NCAA probation. Because she was ruled an innocent victim of the violations, the NCAA ruled she could transfer without having to redshirt.

“Of course, it would be a great benefit to our team this year for Chana to be able to play with us,” Riggins said. “But she has been through a lot, and this will give her an opportunity to get back on track and get adjusted to her new situation.”
