Wall Falls, Kills 50 Prospectors
From Reuters
RIO DE JANEIRO —
At least 50 prospectors were killed and about 70 injured today when a wall collapsed at a gold field in northern Brazil, a federal police spokesman said.
He said the accident occurred at Serra Pelada, in the southeastern Amazon basin, where it had been raining heavily. He had no further details. Serra Pelada (Bald Hill), deep in the equatorial rain forest, was opened up in 1980 by thousands of fortune-seekers who turned a hillside into a labyrinth of diggings.
