The City Council in New Orleans voted to close city government on Fridays, from Oct. 10 to Jan. 3, and tax the income of everyone who works in the city to help erase a $10-million deficit. Council members also voted a 20% salary cut for themselves, following the lead of Mayor Sidney Barthelemy, who a day earlier announced he would take a 20% pay cut. All city offices will be put on a four-day week, but police and other emergency services will continue with reduced forces on a daily basis.
